Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71463

This specimen was lot 71463 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $5,280. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom (First Restoration). 5 Francs, 1815-BB. Strasbourg Mint. Louis XVIII. PCGS AU-58. No doubt one of the finest of this RARE emission extant, the present near-Mint crown dazzles with a pale gray hue and tremendous remaining lustrous brilliance. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Wade Hinderling at the ANA in Detroit on 29 July 1984 for $1,450)." This type was struck 1814-15 and many of the 31 known dates are rare. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate in France after World War One.

Recorded mintage: 1,545^[2], a rare date, plus 3,723 for Napoleon.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
