SB125-34247r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34247 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Obsidional Issues. Siege of Strasbourg. Décime Restrike, "1814"-BB. Strasbourg Mint. Louis XVIII. PCGS MS-65. Variety with dot after denomination and after date. Though considered by PCGS to be a restrike issue, Margolis notes it to be a "...specimen or essay striking on [a] polished flan, with edge carefully filed smooth." Regardless, a tremendously alluring and enchanting offering. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Jean Vinchon on 29 January 1955 for $1.15). Ex: Palace Collections of Egypt [King Farouk] (Sotheby's - 3/1954) Lot # 2183 (part of)." This is a later restrike of a coin issued 1814-15 during the siege of Strasbourg. The issues of 1815 were reduced in weight from 25 g to 20 g. They continued to circulate for decades afterward, causing most cataloguers to include them as regular French coinage. All are very difficult to obtain in choice condition.

Recorded mintage: 1,208,000 for 1814-15.

Specification: 25 g, bronze, 32 mm diameter, this specimen 22.31 g.

Catalog reference: KM-701; Gad-196.(a); F.132/1.
