SB925-71332r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71332 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. 5 Francs, 1814-W. Lille Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS EF-45. KM-694.16; Gad-584. Mintage: 13,812. A SCARCER crown in more elevated states of preservation, this charming specimen bears very little in the way of circulation, all while retaining some alluring brilliance across both sides. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Lepczyk in March 1984 for $90). Ex: George Sobin Collection (Joseph Lepczyk - 3/1984) Lot # 1349." Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at Lille in 1809-14. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the seventh, struck 1809-14 with a complete set of this type comprising 86 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate in France after World War One.

Recorded mintage: 32,824[2], a rather scarce date, plus 59,592 for Louis XVIII.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Catalog reference: Dav-85; Sobin-58; F.307/86, KM-694.7; Gad-584.
