This specimen was lot 20137 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Silver 5 Francs Essai (Pattern), 1814. Louis XVIII. PCGS SPECIMEN-61 Gold Shield. Struck to commemorate the visit to the Lille mint by the Duke of Berry. This attractive and nicely preserved example, struck in the weight and diameter of 5 Francs, exhibits bold design elements with clearly formed legends displaying rich mottled gray patina with areas of richer coloration amongst the devices. This seldom encountered piece offers much originality with a pleasing appearance sure to catch the attention of 5 Francs collectors looking to add depth to their collection." This rare monnaie de visite is not listed in KM or the regular Gadoury. It is mentioned in bronze and silver in Guilloteau.
