Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 1046

This specimen was lot 1046 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €250 (about US$312 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis XVIII, première restauration (1814-1815), AV 20 francs, 1814 W, Lille. Très Beau à Superbe. (France, Louis XVIII, first restoration (1814-15), gold twenty francs of 1814, Lille mint, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This issue, from the Lille mint, is a better date of a type struck 1814-15. The twenty francs of Louis XVIII are divided into two types, F.517 (first restoration, 1814-15) and F.519 (second restoration, bare head, 1816-24). It was demonetized in 2005.

Recorded mintage: 59,592[2], a better date.

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier (1763-1819).
