Jean Elsen sale 117, lot 1828
France 1813W 2 francs rev JElsen 117-1828.jpg

This specimen was lot 1828 in Jean Elsen sale 117 (Brussels, June 2013), where it sold for €270 (about US$426 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AR 2 francs, 1813 W, Lille. Petits coups. Belle patine. presque Superbe. (France, Napoleon I (1804-14), silver two francs of 1813, Lillie mint. Small nicks, nice toning, about extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1809-14 during the reign of Napoleon I from numerous mints. The specimen shown is from Lille and is a somewhat better date. It is priced[1] about 60% more than the commonest date (1811A). Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All two francs issued prior to 1859, including this one, were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only 0.835 fine.

Recorded mintage: 87,845.

Specification: 10 g, 0.900 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, lettered edge, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.

Catalog reference: F.255/66, Gad-501, KM 693.
