Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 23451

This specimen was lot 23451 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Franc, 1812-W. Lille Mint. Napoleon as Emperor. PCGS MS-63. Largely untoned, this steely gray minor presents choice brilliance and a hint of burnished iridescence as one approaches the lower portions of the reverse peripheries." This type was struck in France at numerous mints 1809-14 and a complete set comprises 64 dates and mintmarks. This date from the Lille mint is common. An 1812/1 overdate is reported.

Recorded mintage: 336,624 (including 1812/1)[2].

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, plain edge, 18 mm diameter, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier (1763-1819).
