Sincona sale 26, lot 3134

This specimen was lot 3134 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$494 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"France, I. Kaiserreich. Napoleon I. 1804-1815 1 Franc 1812. D, Lyon. Gutes vorzüglich. Min. Justierspuren im Revers. Aussergewöhnliche Erhaltung. (France, first Empire, Napoleon I, 1804-15, one franc of 1812, Lyon mint. Good extremely fine, minor adjustment marks on the reverse.)"

This issue, from the Lyon mint, is a better date of a type struck 1809-14. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed. This type is the last and probably the most available Napoleonic franc. It was demonetized in 1869. A complete set of this type comprises 74 date and mintmark combinations, many very rare. This date is priced[2] about 2½ times the common date (1811A).

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819; this specimen 4.97 g.

Recorded Mintage: 146,717[2].
