Jean Elsen sale 148, lot 1027

This specimen was lot 1027 in Jean Elsen sale 148 (Brussels, September 2021), where it sold for €190 (about US$269 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AR 5 francs, 1812M, Toulouse. Gad-584. Très Beau. (France, Napoleon I, 1804-14, silver five francs of 1812, Toulouse mint. Very Fine.)"

This five francs is the most common coin of Napoleon, being minted from dozens of mints in large quantities. The 1812-M, however, is priced about 2½ times the 1812-A.

Recorded mintage: 1,615,871[2].

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.
