Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 71228

This specimen was lot 71228 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $244. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. 2 Francs, 1812-T. Nantes Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, VF Details. A number of scuffs are observed upon the reverse, along with moderate circulation and some mottling of color. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Bill Rosenblum in 2003 for $225)." This type was struck 1809-14 during the reign of Napoleon I from numerous mints. The specimen shown is from Nantes and is scarce. Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All two francs issued prior to 1859, including this one, were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only 0.835 fine.

Recorded mintage: 19,302 (19,320 per the SCWC).

Specification: 10 grams, 0.900 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
