Stack's Bowers 2014 ANA sale, lot 621

The first specimen was lot 759 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$428 including buyer's fee). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, Königreich, Premier Empire. Napoleon I. (1804-1814) 20 Francs 1813, Utrecht. Gutes sehr schön. (empire of France, Napoleon I (1804-14), twenty francs of 1813, Utrecht mint, good very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 621 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description^[3] noted, "FRANCE. 20 Franc, 1813-(Flag). Utrecht Mint. NGC AU-58. One year type." The Utrecht mint was occupied by French forces during Napoleon's rule and used to strike coins of French design. After his fall, the mint resumed issuing Dutch coins.

Recorded mintage: 90,099^[2].

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered *DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE*, this specimen 6,41 g.
