Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 34305

This specimen was lot 34305 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $9,600. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom (First Restoration). 5 Francs, 1814-BB. Strasbourg Mint. Louis XVIII. PCGS MS-63. The sole example of date and mint in the PCGS census, this exceedingly Choice crown stands as a stunningly superior representative, with a level of quality that one is not likely to encounter again anytime soon. Lightly toned and handsomely struck. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Bourgey in 1988 for $1,288). Ex: Émile Bourgey (6/1988) Lot # 473." This is a rare date of a type struck 1814-15 during Louis XVIII's first restoration. There are 31 date and mintmark combinations, of which the 1814-BB is among the rarest.
