This specimen was lot 42189 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Silver 5 Francs Essai (Pattern), 1815. Brussels Mint. Louis XVIII. NGC MS-62. By François Trebuchet. Edge: "TITRE NEUF DIXIEMES * POIDS VINGT-CINQ GRAMMES" in raised lettering. A VERY SCARCE and attractive Pattern type, struck later than the noted date based on the use of raised lettering on the edge, indicative of manufacture after 1830, and on the overall high quality of production. Attractively patinated and glossy, with minimal wispiness in line with the assigned grade." The SCWC lists numerous patterns (KM Pn 22 thru Pn30) struck on the occasion of Louis' restoration to the throne of France in 1815. Others likely exist. Guilloteau lists many patterns but some are actually fantasies struck outside the mint.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered TITRE NEUF DIXIEMES * POIDS VINGT-CINQ GRAMMES, designed by François Trebuchet.

Catalog reference: KM Pn29, Maz-749; VG-2463.
