Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1297

This specimen was lot 1297 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,211 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier, période des Cent-Jours (1815), AR 5 francs, 1815M, Toulouse. Rare Légère patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (empire of France, Napoleon I, Hundred Days, silver five francs of 1815, Toulouse mint. Rare, lightly toned, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This specimen from the Toulouse mint was struck during Napoleon's brief return to power during 1814-15 (the "Hundred Days"). It is scarce in all grades. Five francs of Louis XVIII also exist for 1815 and are quite a bit more available.

Recorded mintage: 79,685 plus 632,465 for Louis XVIII.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.
