The first specimen was lot 50417 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $623. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. 5 Francs, 1815-A. NGC MS-62. Dark toned obverse. From the Madeleine Collection." The second specimen was lot 31410 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[2] noted, "France. Louis XVIII 5 Francs 1815-A MS65 PCGS, Paris mint. Struck in the year of the second and final restoration of the Bourbon King Louis XVIII, this exceptional Gem projects an aura of careful preservation. Produced to an exacting precision, the razor-sharp raised motifs appear almost pattern-like, while the silky fields are beaming with magnificent, argent luminosity. Certainly of utmost quality and prestige, this delightful representative is destined to an elite cabinet." This type was struck 1814-15 and many of the 31 known dates are rare. This one is somewhat scarce, being priced double the common date (1814-A or 1814-M).
