Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 1051

This specimen was lot 1051 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €220 (about US$274 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis XVIII, première restauration (1814-1815), AV 20 francs, 1815 L, Bayonne. Fleur horizontale. Très Beau. (France, Louis XVIII, first restoration (1814-15), gold twenty francs of 1815, Bayonne mint, horizontal flower, very fine.)"

This is a scarce date of a type struck 1814-15 for the first restoration of Louis XVIII. An 1815/4 overdate exists for this issue but is awarded no premium.

Recorded mintage: 54,444[2], a better date.

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.

Catalog reference: Fr-526; KM-706.3; Gad-1026, F.517/14.
