Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 34328

This specimen was lot 34328 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $10,800. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire (Les Cent-Jours). 5 Francs, 1815-Q. Perpignan Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS MS-63. The finest of just three observed for the date and mint in the PCGS census, and the only Mint State representative, this stunning offering is no doubt a difficult specimen and an absolute conditional RARITY. Lightly toned a burnished hue in a few places, this important crown yields an abundance of glistening brilliance. From the Richard Margolis Collection." This specimen from the Perpignan mint was struck during Napoleon's brief return to power during 1814-15 (the "Hundred Days"). It is rather scarce in all grades. Five francs of Louis XVIII also exist for 1815 and are quite a bit more available.

Recorded mintage: 20,486 plus 923,931 for Louis XVIII^[2].

Specification: 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.
