Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1327

This specimen was lot 1327 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €550 (about US$729 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV louis d'or aux huit L et aux insignes, 1701L, Bayonne. 3e réformation. D/ T. laurée à d., les cheveux courts. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, brochant sur un sceptre et une main de justice. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold louis of the eight "L's" and insignia of 1701, Bayonne mint, third reformation. Obverse: laureate head right with short hair; reverse: cross formed of eight "L's" over a scepter and the hand of justice. Very Fine.)"

This louis d'or aux huit L et aux insignes was struck 1700-04. This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or à l'écu was succeeded by the louis d'or aux 4 L struck 1693-1700, in turn superseded by the type shown here. Droulers[2] prices this issue as a slightly better date tho none are common.

Recorded mintage: 6,395 + some rf[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 6,71 g.
