Sincona sale 46, lot 348

This specimen was lot 348 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 4,600 CHF (about US$5,520 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. 2 Louis dor aux huit L et aux insignes 1701 P, Dijon. Réformation. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, double louis d'or of the 8 L's and insignia of 1701, Dijon mint, reformed. Very rare, Very fine.)"

This type, called a double louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes was issued 1700-04 on new and "reformed" blanks and like all double louis before the 1740's, is rare. This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here.

Reported Mintage: unknown but all known specimens are "reformed".

Specification: 13.50 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, designed by J. Röettiers; this specimen 13.39 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 400, KM-335.16; Gad-261; Dupl-1442a; DFW-289, Fr-435.
