Jean Elsen sale 146, lot 147

This specimen was lot 147 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,789 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV double louis d'or aux huit L et aux insignes, 1701AA, Metz. 3e réformation. D/ T. laurée à d., les cheveux courts. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, brochant sur un sceptre et une main de justice. Différents: croisette (Jean Sauvayre) et triangle sur sa pointe. Extrêmement rare. Beau à Très Beau. Provient de Burgan, Paris, 2000 et de la collection Teitgen, Paris, 26-28 octobre 2015, 890. La deuxième réformation cessa le 31 mars 1700, l'atelier de Metz semble avoir cessé toute activité dès le 8 janvier 1700 et fut rouvert à partir d'octobre 1701 à l'occasion de la troisième Réformation. Celle-ci était caractérisée par un trèfle mais l'atelier de Metz utilisa un différent particulier, remplaçant le trèfle par un triangle inversé. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold double louis of the eight L's and the insignia of 1701, Metz mint, third reformation. Obverse: laureate head right with short hair; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned L's over a scepter and a baton; privy marks tiny cross and a triangle. Extremely rare, Fine - Very Fine. The second reformation ended in March 1700 with the Metz mint ceasing all activity in January. It was reopened in October 1701 to participate in the third reformation. Reformed coinage was to be marked with a trefoil but the Metz mint used its own mark, an inverted triangle.)"

This type, called a double louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes was issued 1700-04 on new and "reformed" blanks and like all double louis before the 1740's, is rare. This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here.
