Künker sale 352, lot 1190

This specimen was lot 1190 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,784 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Louis XIV, 1643-1715. 1/2 Louis d'or aux huit L et aux insignes 1701, CC, Besançon. Réformation. GOLD. R Überprägungsspuren, fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, half louis d'or of the 8 L's and insignia of 1701, Besançon mint, reformed. Rare, struck over earlier type, about extremely fine.)"

The demi-louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes is much scarcer than its larger brother. This type was struck 1701-03 at numerous mints. All the dates are rare but the Paris mint issues are the only ones that turn up with any frequency.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.917 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 3,33 g.
