This specimen was lot 22104 in Heritage sale 61352 (Dallas, December 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV 1/2 Ecu 1701-)( F15 NGC, Besancon mint. A very scarce mint and date pairing, missing from the Gadoury and Droulers references. Ex. iNumis 28 (March 2015, lot 774)." The specimen shown is an demi-écu aux insignes ("half écu with insignia") struck in Tours during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1701-03 in large quantities, almost exclusively by overstriking older half écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux 8 L, 2éme type. The Besançon mint was a backwoods operation and most of its products are rare. We are not at all shocked that this example is from an unlisted date.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 623, Dr/2 № 425, KM-325 (unlisted date), Gad-189 (Unlisted date), Dupl-1534B.
