Jean Elsen sale 153, lot 1509

This specimen was lot 1509 in Jean Elsen sale 153 (Brussels, December 2022), where it sold for €4,200 (about US$5,311 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu de Flandre aux insignes, 1701 W, Lille. 3e réformation (septembre 1701). Trèfle après la date. D/ B. à d., cuirassé à l'antique. R/ Ecu rond et couronné, écartelé de France, Bourgogne nouveau, Bourgogne ancien et Navarre, brochant sur une main de justice et un sceptre posés en sautoir. Extrêmement rare. Flan large. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver écu of Flanders with insignia of 1701, Lille mint, third reformation, trefoil after the date. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: round arms of France, new Burgundy, old Burgundy and Navarre, posed over crossed scepter and hand of justice. Extremely rare, large flan, Very Fine.)"

This type, struck only at Lille 1701-03, has long been a famous rarity. A half écu (Dr/4 № 626) and quarter écu (Dr/4 № 699) of this reformation also exist, equally rare. The écus carambole, of which this is the third and final type, were intended to circulate in northern France and the Spanish Netherlands, where they competed with ducatons.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf[2].

Specification: 37.65 g, 0.833 fine silver, 45 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 37,11 g.
