This specimen was lot 22119 in Heritage sale 61352 (Dallas, December 2023), where it sold for $2,100. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1701-BB AU58 NGC, Strasbourg mint. A stunning representative and the cusp of a seemingly deserving Mint State assignment, showcasing full radiance and largely unhandled devices. The lone specimen certified by NGC." This louis d'or aux huit L et aux insignes was struck 1700-04. This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or à l'écu was succeeded by the louis d'or aux 4 L struck 1693-1700, in turn superseded by the type shown here. Droulers[2] prices this issue as a slightly better date tho none are common.

Recorded mintage: 1,024 fn plus unknown rf.

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 414, Dr/2 № 270, KM 334.4, Fr-436, Gad-253 (R).
