Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73333
SB1123-73333r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73333 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Ecu, 1701-T. Nantes Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS AU-58. About as close to Mint State status as one can get, this crown is rather peculiar in that it has been overstruck not once, but twice. While it is not uncommon to be able to discern an undertype (in this case, a 1694-9 Rennes Mint "Palm" Ecu [Dup-1520]), it is extremely unusual to encounter an additional undertype. Here, the prominent lis on the head of the king is out of place, and goes with neither the 1701 type nor the aforementioned 1694 undertype. Instead, based upon placement and the faint lettering above it and 180' degrees opposite to it, it would appear to the reverse of a 1690-93 Ecu of 8 Ls (Dup-1514), thus making it the original undertype to two successive overtypes." The specimen shown is an écu aux insignes ("écu with insignia") struck in Nantes during the reign of Louis XIV. The auctioneer's description is confusing as it refers to a half écu. This type was struck 1701-04 in substantial quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the écu aux 8 L, 2éme type. Droulers[2] prices this date as a common date, but even a common date is priced 40% higher than an écu à la mèche longue.
