Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 927
France J124-927r.jpg

This specimen was lot 927 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €240 (about US$299 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu aux insignes, 1702 A, Paris. 3e réformation. Droit: B. à droite, cuirassé à l'antique. Revers: Ecu de France rond, couronné, brochant sur une main de justice et un sceptre posés en sautoir. Nettoyé. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver écu of the insignia of 1702, Paris mint, third reformation. Obverse: bust to right with antique armor; reverse: crowned round arms of France over the scepter and the hand of justice. Cleaned, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The specimen shown is an écu aux insignes ("écu with insignia") struck in Rennes during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1701-04 in substantial quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the écu aux 8 L, 2éme type. Droulers[1] prices this date as a common date, but even a common date is priced 40% higher than an écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 91,800 on new blanks plus 552,239 on "reformed blanks" (older coins)[1].

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers; this specimen 27,14 g.
