Künker sale 293, lot 1854

This specimen was lot 1854 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €320 (about US$431 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XIV, 1643-1715. 1/12 Ecu aux insignes 1703, A, Paris. Réformation. RR Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, twelfth écu of the insignia of 1703, Paris mint, reformed. Rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1701-04, all on "reformed blanks" (older coins). It had a face value of 6 sols, 4 deniers tournois. This denomination became massively popular in the 1650's and 1660's as it carried a premium in the Levant trade (Greece, Turkey, Syria and Egypt) but demand dwindled thereafter and this type is rare.

Specification: 2.28 g, 0.917 fine silver, 27-28 mm diameter, reeded edge.
