Stack's Bowers October 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74715
SB925-74715r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74715 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/12 Ecu, 1702-E. Tours Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS AU-58. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck 1701-04, all on "reformed blanks" (older coins). It had a face value of 6 sols, 4 deniers tournois. This denomination became massively popular in the 1650's and 1660's as it carried a premium in the Levant trade (Greece, Turkey, Syria and Egypt) but demand dwindled thereafter and this type is rare. The obverse die is a leftover from the earlier douzième d'écu aux palmes; this was done at several mints (B, D, E, H, P, W).

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf, a scarce date[2].

Specification: 2.28 g, 0.917 fine silver, 27-28 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 747, Dr/2 № 433, KM-321.6; Gad-121.
