H61259-99066r.jpg

This specimen was lot 99066 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1702-M AU50 NGC, Toulouse mint. Louis d'Or aux 8 L et aux insignes. Flan Reforme. Struck over a 1691-S Louis d'Or of the same monarch (cf. Gad-250). Pale gold toning over lightly handled devices, with clear host features." This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux 8 L, struck 1700-04, was succeeded by the louis d'or aux insignes struck 1704-09.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf.

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 414, Dr/2 № 270, Fr-436, KM 334.13, Gad-253 (R), Dupl-1443A.
