This specimen was lot 30099 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $11,400. The catalog description^[1] noted, "France. Louis XIV gold 2 Louis d'Or 1702-N MS62 PCGS, Montpellier mint, Flan réformé. A simply stunning specimen from this highly collectible type and one that sees impressive sums when located in decidedly Mint State preservations. Blessed with a resounding strike that largely obliterated the host-coin details that so often poke through on even the finest representatives, the piece at hand endures as the finest, both conditionally and aesthetically for this scarce date/mint combination. As such we anticipate a bidder response commensurate with the growing appreciation for fine examples of early French gold." This type, called a double louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes was issued 1700-04 on new and "reformed" blanks and like all double louis before the 1740's, is rare. This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here.
