Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 38151
SB125-38151r.jpg

This specimen was lot 38151 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1702-T. Nantes Mint. Louis XIV. NGC Unc Details--Cleaned. Overstruck on 1693 Louis D'Or." This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux 8 L, struck 1700-04, was succeeded by the louis d'or aux insignes struck 1704-09. Droulers[1] gives this date from the Nantes mint no premium over the common date (1701-A) but none are cheap.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, designed by J. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 414, Fr-436; Gad-253; KM-334.19.
