France 1702-BB 34-1/2 sols

Sincona sale 63, lot 1014

This specimen was lot 1014 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$313 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE | Strassburg/Strasbourg, Stadt, 1/2 Ecu aux insignes 1702 BB, Strasbourg. Réformation. Selten. Sehr schön. (France, city of Strasbourg, half écu of the insignia of 1702, Strasbourg mint, reformed. Rare, Very fine.)"

This type was struck 1701-02 over 36 sols de Strasbourg (1694-1702) and circulated solely in Alsace. It was issued on the orders of Louis XIV and is usually catalogued as a French coin. Droulers[2] notes that most of the survivors were found in Wurttemberg and Baden, not France, suggesting that it was struck for circulation in Germany.
