Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73011
SB223-73011r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73011 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1702-C. Caen Mint. Louis XIV. ANACS VF-30. Despite some time in circulation, this piece demonstrates wholesome details and mint brilliance, with an appealing and enticing charm." This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux 8 L, struck 1700-04, was succeeded by the louis d'or aux insignes struck 1704-09. Droulers[2] gives this date from the Caen mint some premium over the common date (1701-A) but none are cheap.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Gad-253, Fr-436; Dr/4 № 414, Dr/2 № 270, KM-334.5.
