Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale, lot 73607

This specimen was lot 73607 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1702-B. Rouen Mint. Louis XIV. NGC EF-40. A very handsome Ecu, this beauty displays light wear and attractive steely-gray surfaces. As many of these types are, this example is overstruck, with visible evidence of the understruck coin, a 1699 Ecu, on the reverse." This écu aux insignes was struck 1701-03, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the écu aux 8 L, 2éme type. Droulers[2] does not list this date as rare, despite the modest mintage.

Recorded mintage: 16,412 plus 16,323 rf[2].

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Joseph Röettiers.
