France 1701-BB 33 sols

Sincona sale 47, lot 1663

This specimen was lot 1663 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$240 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, Konigreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. 1/2 Ecu de Strasbourg 1701 BB, Strassburg. Réformation. Sehr schön. Kleine Kratzer. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, half écu of Strasbourg of 1701, Strasbourg mint. Very fine, Small scratches.)"

This type was struck at Strasbourg only 1694-1701. The 1694 is the most common date. All were struck over 30 sols de Strasbourg (1682-89) and then restruck as 34½ sols de Strasbourg (Dr/4 № 627) of 1701-02 or 36½ sols de Strasbourg (Dr/4 № 633) of 1704. Droulers[2] notes that most of the survivors were found in Wurttemberg and Baden, not France, suggesting that it was struck for circulation in Germany.

Recorded mintage: 194,950, all "reformed"[1].

Specification: 15.30 g, 0.729 fine silver 34 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers, this specimen 14.77 g.
