Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale, lot 73612
SB222-73612r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73612 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Ecu, 1701-S. Troyes Mint. Louis XIV. NGC AU-50. Struck over an earlier issue. A boldly detailed and wholesome coin, with pervasive dark gray toning and a slightly wavy flan." The specimen shown is an demi-écu aux insignes ("half écu with insignia") struck in Troyes during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1701-03 in large quantities, almost exclusively by overstriking older half écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux 8 L, 2éme type. Droulers[2] gives this issue a different catalog number than the other mints as the Troyes mint recycled obverse dies from the demi-écu aux palmes. Lille, Bordeaux and Lyon also did this.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf[2].

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Joseph Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 623, Dr/2 № 425, Gad-189a, KM-325.17.
