Heritage sale 3024, lot 23811
from Heritage Auction Galleries

This specimen was lot 23811 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,233.75. The catalog description[2] noted, "Louis XIIII Ecu 1701-A, AU58 NGC, struck over an earlier Ecu but with bold details including the date and mintmark, an attractive coin with a strong bust of the King and old-time cabinet patina. Sold with an auction tag from Coin Galleries July 1955, Lot 1043." This French écu aux insignes was struck 1701-03, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the écu aux 8 L, 2éme type. Droulers[1] notes this date as common.

Recorded mintage: 14,374 struck on new blanks plus 8,168,648 "reformed"[1].

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
