from Sincona sale 11. lot 1319

This specimen was lot 1319 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,238 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes 1701, Paris. Réformation. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, louis d'or of the eight L's and insignia of 1701, Paris mint. Extremely fine.)"

Droulers[2] calls this type louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes (louis with 8 L's and insignia). This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux 8 L, struck 1700-04, was succeeded by the louis d'or aux insignes struck 1704-09. This is a common date for the type.

Recorded mintage: 50,316 new plus 121,273 reformed[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 24-26 mm diameter, designed by Joseph Roëttiers. This specimen is 6.68 g.
