SB125-31324r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31324 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $11,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 2 Louis d'Or, 1701/0-A. Paris Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS MS-62. Variety with Flan neuf (new flan). The single finest certified of the overdate on the PCGS population report. This beautifully preserved example boasts lustrous satiny surfaces with a nice cartwheel effect and bold well-form design features. The obverse displays a pale golden coloration while the reverse offers slightly richer coloration in the protected areas adding a bit of contrast. Wholly original looking and very attractive, these issues should be considered VERY RARE and highly desirable when found struck on a fresh new planchet. Seldom encountered this piece is certain to garner much attention from French and world gold collector alike." This type, called a double louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes was issued 1700-04 on new and "reformed" blanks and like all double louis before the 1740's, is rare. This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here.
