This specimen was lot 33473 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $4,320. The lot description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1703/2-N MS63 PCGS, Montpelier mint. Flan neuf. A fascinating offering, the 1703 date being noted as Rare in Krause but also no mention of this overdate variety. Exhibiting tremendous preservation, this example still retains a full original layer of satin brilliance and the peripheries have toned beautifully to a refreshing tangerine coloration. In addition, the Flan neuf attribute has created a level of uniformity in the strike and flan that is often missing on contemporary French pieces that were struck over existing coinage. The only certified specimen certified at any level between both major grading companies. When a coin is both scarce and beautiful, it's a wonderful combination." Droulers[2] calls this type louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes (louis with 8 L's and insignia). This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux 8 L, struck 1700-04, was succeeded by the louis d'or aux insignes struck 1704-09.

Recorded mintage: 54,605 fn + 2,651 rf[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.
