Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 31326
SB125-31326r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31326 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1704. Pau Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS AU-53. This lightly circulated example offers boldly struck design elements with even wear and remaining luster in the protected areas. Though the strike is well executed, portions of the undertypes are noticed which can be attributed. The center of the obverse features two characteristics for Gadoury type # 252 (1693-1700) from the Aix mint, the mint mark "&" is seen on the monarch's face and a bold "L" on his neck, no portions of the date are visible. When examining the reverse a bold four digit date of '1691' is seen at 9 o'clock with faint remnants of the "N" mint mark for Montpellier Mint immediately after indicative of Gadoury type # 250 (1690-93). It is a common occurrence to be able to identify the undertype, at least in part, for many French issues of this era, but to be able to recognize two types is something quite special. Not only is this a RARE and popular mint from this series the present piece has the added allure of having identifiable attributes of two previous issues. This seldom encountered issue is sure to capture the attention of many advanced collectors seeking this highly sought after and desirable mint." The louis d'or aux insignes, struck 1704-09, was preceded by the louis d'or aux 8 L struck 1700-04. This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here.

Recorded mintage: unknown but "très peu"[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 24-26 mm diameter, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 416a, Dr/2 № 275a, Fr-439; KM-366; Gad-254a.
