France 1704-& louis d'or
This specimen was lot 31437 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1704-& MS62+ NGC Aix mint. Overstruck on an earlier emission of the same monarch. Highly pleasing quality for this elusive and highly sought-after mint, traces of the undertype strongest on the truncation, but otherwise relative unobtrusive. Currently the second finest of this mint-date combination seen by NGC, with a micro-granularity to the surfaces that speaks of quality." Droulers[2] calls this type louis d'or aux insignes (louis with insignia). This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux insignes, struck 1704-09, was preceded by the louis d'or aux 8 L struck 1700-04. Droulers[2] gives this date from the Aix mint a 10% premium over the common date (1704-A) but none are cheap.
Recorded mintage: unknown[2], all on "reformed" blanks.
Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 24-26 mm diameter, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
