This specimen was lot 33721 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1704-L MS61 PCGS, Bayonne mint. Overstruck on a 1701? Louis d'Or of the same monarch. Featuring strong die polish in the recessed regions of the king's portrait that add a singular eye appeal." This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux insignes, struck 1704-09, was succeeded by the louis d'or au soleil struck 1709-15. Droulers[2] notes this as a rare date. Records show that the Bayonne mint also struck louis d'or aux 8 L in 1704 but none have been found.

Recorded mintage: 3,817 on new blanks plus 5,644 "reformed"[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dupl-1446A; Fr-439, Dr/4 № 416, Dr/2 № 275, KM 365.11, Gad-254.
