Sincona sale 46, lot 350

This specimen was lot 350 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,200 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Louis dor aux insignes 1704 A, Paris. Réformation. Gutes sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, louis d'or of the insignia of 1704, Paris mint. Good very fine.)"

Droulers notes three types of louis d'or for 1704: Dr/4 № 414 (the prior louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes), rare; Dr/4 № 415 (louis d'or aux insignes et aux cheveux longs), a scarce transitional type; and Dr/4 № 416 (louis d'or aux insignes et aux cheveux courts, type définitif, shown here). This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here.

Reported Mintage: 597,502; all known specimens are "reformed".

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, designed by J. Röettiers; this specimen 6.69 g.

Catalog reference: Gadoury 254. Fr-439, Dr/4 № 416.
