Künker sale 293, lot 1855

This specimen was lot 1855 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,348 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XIV, 1643-1715. Ecu aux huit L 1704, Münzzeichen "9", Rennes. Réformation. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, écu of the eight "L's" of 1704, Rennes mint, reformed. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

Shown is a écu aux huit L, deuxieme type (écu with 8 L's, 2nd type) struck at the Rennes mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. The type was struck until 1709; there are also quarter and half écus struck during this period with this design. This date is common but rarely comes so choice.

Recorded mintage: 85,380 on new blanks plus 95,368 over old coins.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
