Goldberg NY International sale 58, lot 1066
GNY23-1066r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1066 in Goldberg's NY International sale 58 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Louis XIV (1643-1715). Gold Louis d'or aux insignes, 1704-G. Poitiers mint. Struck over earlier type. Lustrous. Pop 2; only 2 graded at PCGS. In PCGS holder graded MS 61." This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux insignes, struck 1704-09, was succeeded by the louis d'or au soleil struck 1709-15. Droulers[2] notes this mint for 1704-05 only.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 416, Dr/2 № 275, Fr-439; Gad-254; KM 365.7.
