France 1704-H louis d'or
This specimen was lot 33722 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1704-H AU58 PCGS, La Rochelle mint. Overstruck on a 1694 Louis d'Or of the same monarch. Very appealing quality for the type, the host date quite clear, though the undertype otherwise does little to disrupt the overstruck design." This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux insignes, struck 1704-09, was succeeded by the louis d'or au soleil struck 1709-15. Droulers[2] notes this as a scarce date.
Recorded mintage: all struck on "reformed" blanks[2].
Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J. Röettiers.
