This specimen was lot 22128 in Heritage sale 61352 (Dallas, December 2023), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV gold 2 Louis d'Or 1704-M XF45 NGC, Toulouse mint. An intriguing double Louis d'Or from the 'Sun King', presented here with handsome originality from a short but gentle stint in circulation." The double louis d'or aux insignes was struck 1704-09 almost exclusively on "reformed" blanks (older coins). A considerable number were made at numerous mints yet the type is quite rare; this is the second one posted on this site. The long haired bust shown here was used only at Paris 1705-07; the other mints used a short haired bust by Joseph Roettiers. They were probably melted to make the double louis d'or au soleil, also very scarce.

Recorded mintage: 3,314 fn plus unknown rf.

Specification: 13.50 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28-30 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 416, Dr/2 № 275, Fr-441, KM 368.10, Dup-1445.
