France 1705-A 2 louis d'or
This specimen was lot 1897 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$6,930 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV double louis d'or aux insignes, 1705 A, Paris. Type aux cheveux longs. Flan neuf. D/ T. laurée à d. R/ Croix formée de quatre lis couronnés, brochant sur un sceptre et une main de justice. Très rare. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold double louis of the insignia of 1705, Paris mint, type with long hair, new planchet. Obverse: laureate head right; reverse: cross formed of four crowned fleurs-de-lys, divided by a scepter and the hand of justice. Very rare, very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
The double louis d'or aux insignes was struck 1704-09 almost exclusively on "reformed" blanks (older coins). A considerable number were made at numerous mints yet the type is quite rare; this is the second one posted on this site. The long haired bust shown here was used only at Paris 1705-07; the other mints used a short haired bust by Joseph Roettiers. They were probably melted to make the double louis d'or au soleil, also very scarce. The short hair variety is rare, the long hair variety is very rare.
Recorded mintage: 260,309 including Dr/4 № 402/KM 368.1 (short hair).
Specification: 13.50 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28-30 mm diameter, this specimen 13,42 g.
