Jean Elsen sale 153, lot 1518

This specimen was lot 1518 in Jean Elsen sale 153 (Brussels, December 2022), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,075 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV louis d'or aux insignes, 1705 A, Paris. 4e réformation. D/ T. laurée à d., les cheveux courts. R/ Croix formée de quatre lis couronnés, brochant sur un sceptre et une main de justice. Légèrement décentré. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold louis of the insignia of 1705, Paris mint, fourth reformation. Obverse: laureate head right with short hair; reverse: cross formed of four crowned lilies over a scepter and the hand of justice. Slightly off center. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. This is a somewhat scarce date of a scarce type.

Recorded mintage: 44,239, including some with a long-haired bust (Dr/4 № 415).

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, designed by J. Röettiers; this specimen is 6,72 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-439, Dr/4 № 416, Dr/2 № 275, Dupl-1446A; Gad-254.
